Privacy Policy

The short version: Bill Split has no user accounts and shows no ads. We store only what's needed to split a bill — the receipt photo, the items on it, the names people enter, and (if you use them) an email address you type or a push notification token — plus anonymous usage analytics about how the app is used. We never sell data, and we don't use your data to train AI models.

Who we are

Bill Split ("we", "us") is an app for splitting restaurant and group bills, operated by its developer, Adam Kulpa. For anything privacy-related, contact adamkulpa16@gmail.com.

What we collect

Receipt photos. The photos of receipts you take or pick from your library. They're uploaded to our servers so the receipt can be read and shared with your group.
Bill details. The items, prices, fees, discounts, tip, restaurant name, and date — read from your receipt (and any edits you make).
Names. The display name each person types when they join a bill. A nickname is fine; we don't verify names.
Email addresses. Only if you use "email me a copy": the address you type is used to send that one email. We don't build mailing lists from it.
Push notification token. Only if you turn on notifications: a device token so we can notify you about activity on your bills. It identifies your device, not you.
Crash and error reports. If the app hits a bug, technical details of the error (device model, OS version, what went wrong) are reported so we can fix it. These reports are about the app, not your bills.
Usage analytics. Which features get used — e.g. that a receipt was scanned, a link was shared, or a bill was locked — along with device type, OS version, and a random device identifier so we can tell repeat use from new use. Analytics never include receipt photos, item names, prices, participant names, or email addresses, and since there are no accounts they can't be tied to who you are.
Session replays (a sample of sessions). For a small share of app sessions we record how the screens are used — which screens appear and where people tap — to find confusing flows and bugs. All text, images, and typed input are masked before recording, so a replay shows the layout of the app but not your receipt, item names, prices, participant names, or anything you type.
Session recordings. To see where the app is confusing, some sessions are replayed as a rough recording of how the screens were used — taps, scrolling and navigation. All text, form fields and images are masked before anything leaves your device, so a recording shows the layout being used, never a receipt, an item, a price, a name or an email address.

What we don't collect

No accounts, usernames, or passwords — the app works without signing up.
No payment details — the app splits bills; it doesn't move money.
No advertising, ad tracking, or cross-app/cross-site tracking. Our analytics are first-party product analytics only — not shared with ad networks or data brokers.
No contacts, location, or background access to your camera or photos — the camera and photo library are used only at the moment you scan a receipt.

How we use your data

Solely to run the app: reading your receipt into items, computing everyone's share, letting people you invite see and claim items on the bill, sending the receipt emails you ask for, delivering notifications you opted into, fixing crashes, and understanding which features are useful so we can improve the app. We never sell your data or use it for advertising.

AI receipt reading

When you scan a receipt, the photo is sent to Anthropic's Claude API, which transcribes the items and totals. The photo is processed to produce that transcription and is not used to train AI models.

Service providers

We use a small number of infrastructure providers to run Bill Split:

Resend	Delivers the receipt emails you request.
Expo & Apple	Deliver app updates and the push notifications you opted into.
Sentry	Collects crash and error reports.
Mixpanel	Stores the anonymous usage analytics and masked session recordings described above.

Each provider receives only what it needs for its job, and none of them may use your data for their own purposes.

Sharing between people on a bill

A bill is shared by link or QR code. Anyone who has the link can see that bill — the receipt, its items, the names on it, and who owes what. Links use long, unguessable codes and are never listed publicly, but treat a bill link like the bill itself: only share it with people who should see it.

Retention and deletion

Bills stay available so your group can refer back to them. A bill's host can delete it in the app, which immediately makes it inaccessible to everyone. Residual copies of deleted bills may persist in our systems and backups for a limited time before being permanently removed.

To have your data permanently erased — a specific bill, a photo, or anything else — email adamkulpa16@gmail.com and we'll take care of it.

Security

All data moves over encrypted connections (HTTPS). Access to a bill requires its link token; receipt photos are stored privately and served through short-lived signed URLs.

Children

Bill Split is not directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect personal information from them.

Your rights

Depending on where you live (e.g. under the GDPR or CCPA), you may have rights to access, correct, export, or delete your personal data, and to object to its processing. Email us and we'll honor them.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, we'll update this page and its date. Material changes will be called out in the app's release notes.
